Kenya’s ambitious High Grand Falls Hydropower Project is gaining significant momentum after the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, joined Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) leaders for a high-level inspection of the proposed site.
The tour on Thursday covered the planned location for the massive 700-megawatt facility and the wider Seven Forks Cascade.
KenGen officials confirmed the project will dramatically strengthen the nation’s long-term electricity supply and deliver a major public safety benefit through enhanced flood control downstream.
During the visit, CS Wandayi commended KenGen’s management of vital hydropower resources, particularly during a period of reduced rainfall.
“I am impressed by KenGen’s professional approach to water resource management and their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to the country,” said Wandayi.
KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, labeled the High Grand Falls initiative a transformative national investment. “Today marks the beginning of an important and transformative journey,” Eng. Njenga told media.
He thanked the government for entrusting KenGen with the project, which aligns directly with Kenya’s drive to boost affordable, clean energy for industrial and economic growth.
Despite current hydrological challenges, KenGen provided a confident operational update. As of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the company reported that Masinga Dam, the cascade’s largest reservoir, maintains a level of 1,053.04 meters above sea level well above its minimum operating level.
KenGen confirmed all Seven Forks plants remain structurally sound and operate optimally, continuing to feed the national grid reliably.
Eng. Njenga reiterated that hydropower remains Kenya’s lowest-cost electricity source, and its prudent use has stabilized power tariffs.
He further assured the public that KenGen’s entire generation fleet including geothermal, wind, thermal, and other hydro stations continues to perform optimally nationwide.
KenGen reaffirmed its core commitment to delivering affordable, clean, and reliable power in support of Kenya’s development goals, with the High Grand Falls project poised to play a pivotal role in the nation’s energy future.
