Nairobi Hospital Launches AI-Powered CT Scanner to Combat NCDs

By Eddah Waithaka

Siemens SOMATOM Drive 256-slice CT scanner delivers faster, precise imaging for cardiovascular, oncology, and diagnostic procedures.

The Nairobi Hospital has introduced a cutting-edge, AI-powered CT scanner to revolutionize diagnostic care and strengthen Kenya’s fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The hospital now offers a 10% discount on all CT scans from June 15 to July 14, 2025, to improve affordability and accessibility.

Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale EGH presided over the launch, praising the hospital for boosting local healthcare confidence and reducing medical tourism.

“This machine is a life-saving tool that will transform diagnosis and treatment. With over 11,000 Kenyans seeking care abroad annually, this investment proves we can deliver world-class healthcare at home. Early detection of NCDs will save lives,” Duale said.

He emphasized the government’s push for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and urged private sector collaboration with initiatives like the Social Health Authority (SHA) and “Lipa SHA Pole Pole” to ease financial burdens on families.

“Let’s build systems that restore dignity and protect livelihoods,” he added.

The Siemens SOMATOM Drive 256-slice CT scanner features dual-source technology and AI-assisted imaging, enabling high-resolution scans with lower radiation exposure and reduced need for contrast agents.

It supports pediatric, cardiac, oncology, and trauma imaging, delivering full-body scans in seconds and improving accuracy for patients with implants.

Dr. Barcley Onyambu, Chairman of The Nairobi Hospital Board, said the upgrade reflects the institution’s commitment to innovation and patient-centered care.

“This scanner is more than technology it’s about dignity, speed, and precision. African institutions must lead with bold vision and uncompromising quality,” he stated.

Dr. Felix Osano, CEO of The Nairobi Hospital, highlighted the scanner’s impact on efficiency and care, “Patients get faster, safer diagnoses whether a child, trauma case, or elderly individual. Doctors gain better planning tools, and the system improves overall.”

The hospital has also upgraded MRI, mammography, and ultrasound services, offering 24-hour reporting and expanded diagnostics through its outpatient network.

“We’re ensuring Kenyans no longer need to travel for world-class care,” Osano said.

Recognized by the European Society for Quality Research and holding ISO certifications in quality management and sustainability, The Nairobi Hospital continues to set benchmarks in African healthcare.

The new CT scanner reinforces its mission to deliver excellence, accessibility, and innovation.
