On Tuesday afternoon, Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli led a delegation of senior officers to Gigiri Police Station after Collins Jumaisi, the main suspect in the Kware murder case, escaped from custody and 12 Eritrean nationals in custody also escaped.
Police noticed that the suspects had escaped on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, when suspects normally have their breakfast.
Police Constable Gerald Mutuku, who was in charge of conducting routine cell checks together with the canteen manager realized that 13 suspects had escaped.
The Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, along with the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed, visited the police station after hearing about Collins Jumaisi’s escape. Following this incident, the officers involved were arrested.
The police officials gathered for an unexpected meeting to discuss their next steps and came to the conclusion that the escape was likely orchestrated from within their cell.
The officers inspected the cell where the suspects were being held and then held a meeting with the officers of the station. The police chiefs also spoke with the officers who were on duty at the time of the escape.
Speaking during a press briefing, the acting IG, Gilbert Masenge stated, “Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders considering officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station.”

In the aftermath of the escape, the Gigiri Police Station has been designated as a crime scene. The DCI is now conducting in-depth investigations to uncover clues that could assist law enforcement in locating the fugit.
