By Eddah Waithaka

On Friday, members of the Kenyan Parliament embarked on a journey aboard the Madaraka Express from the Nairobi SGR Terminus, heading to Mombasa for the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games. The delegation, headed by National Assembly Speaker Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula, set off at 10:00 am, signifying the commencement of an important event designed to promote regional integration and cooperation.

Scheduled to take place from December 7 to December 18, 2024, the games will include a variety of competitions such as athletics, soccer, tug-of-war, and indoor sports. The events will be hosted at several venues, including Mbaraki Stadium, Mombasa Sports Club, and the Aga Khan Academy.

President William Ruto will inaugurate the event on Saturday at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa. The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, which were established in 2009 by the EAC Bureau of Speakers, take place every year and are hosted on a rotational basis by the member countries.

This year’s games seeks to reinforce connections among EAC member states by offering a platform for MPs to participate in friendly competition and cultural exchange. Participants are anticipated to act as goodwill ambassadors for their countries, promoting unity, mutual understanding, and regional collaboration.

As the MPs gear up to represent Kenya in the upcoming games, their journey aboard the Madaraka Express has set a vibrant tone for an event that intertwines diplomacy, sportsmanship, and regional unity. By choosing to “ride with the people,” they are not only fostering a sense of community but also igniting important conversations about the rising acceptance of public transportation among influential figures.

This bold step reflects a growing recognition of the value of shared experiences and highlights a shift in perception towards public transport as a viable and even prestigious mode of travel.

Renowned for its comfort, speed, and beautiful scenery, the Madaraka Express has emerged as a popular choice for Kenyans making the journey between Nairobi and Mombasa.
