On Tuesday, former Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen handed over to new Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in a handover ceremony at Talanta Plaza. Mvurya’s first priority is to prepare Kenya to meet the January 15 CAF deadline to successfully co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next month.
Speaking during the handover, Mvurya said, “I have officially taken over, and the work begins now.It is an honour to serve the people of Kenya. My focus will be on ensuring planned infrastructure projects are completed and providing facilities to nurture talent across the country.”
Earlier this week, Mvurya conducted a virtual meeting with his peers from Uganda and Tanzania to assess the readiness of the three countries for the upcoming tournament. “We reviewed our progress and committed to making the tournament a success. I am pleased to say that we are on track to host a successful CHAN next month,” he stated. The new Cabinet Secretary also emphasized the significance of investing in infrastructure to ensure that Kenya meets international standards.
“My goal is to deliver facilities that will not only host CHAN but also nurture the immense talent in this country,” he added.With systemic challenges, an urgent infrastructure agenda and a major international tournament on the horizon, his leadership is expected to set the tone for Kenya’s sports future.

Former Sports CS Murkomen highlighted the existence of one-man show federations that lack legitimacy, stressing that these organizations primarily serve to enrich their leaders while depriving young athletes of valuable opportunities. He called for a review of the 2013 Sports Law and announced the formation of a task force to address issues of corruption, favoritism and mismanagement within sports federations.
