Women Leaders Stand Strong for Judiciary Integrity

By Eddah Waithaka

Women from various rights organizations in Kenya have united with other Kenyans of goodwill to express their unwavering support for the judiciary and to denounce the malicious attempts to undermine it at the highest level.

In a press statement shared by the women on 31st of January, the women said, “We are aware of the ongoing onslaught against the Chief Justice the Hon. Martha Koome, and the judges of the Supreme Court as well as the victimisation campaign orchestrated by ill_intentioned personalities seeking the destruction of the very fabric of the judiciary by petitioning removal from office of all the judges of the Supreme Court.”

They highlighted that these unwarranted and vicious attacks against the Chief Justice and the Justices of the Supreme Court aim to discredit the judiciary and erode Kenyans’ faith in it. “Such a situation would lead to anarchy. As women we can no longer remain silent. We urge the petitioners to consider immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the petition” read the statement.

The women voiced their deep concern about the increasing trend of targeting women leaders, particularly those in top decision-making positions. They emphasized that Koome’s ascension to lead one of Kenya’s three branches of government represents a historic achievement; however, she now endures constant harassment and abuse.

“It is disturbing that every time a woman rises to a position of power, there are efforts to bring her down. This is unacceptable,” they stated.

The women who spoke at the Echo Network Africa offices in Nairobi urged all women’s rights defenders and organizations, both regionally and nationally, to oppose the efforts to undermine Hon. Chief Justice Martha Koome and other women leaders.
