US, Kenya Vow to Ramp Up Security Cooperation to Safeguard Trade and Investment

By Eddah Waithaka

The United States and Kenya pledged to deepen their security partnership, positioning stability as the non-negotiable foundation for driving economic growth and attracting foreign investment.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Laundau, speaking at a joint press briefing with Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, framed security and economic prosperity as inseparable goals.

“No company invests somewhere to bring jobs when they are dodging bullets,” Laundau stated bluntly. “You cannot talk about economic growth without underlying security.”

The senior U.S. official emphasized that robust bilateral ties would focus on securing the wider Horn of Africa. He affirmed the U.S. commitment to collaborating closely with Kenya to resolve conflicts in neighboring nations.

“We will continue working together because it is good for this country if conflicts in neighboring countries are resolved,” Laundau said. “We are committed to working closely with our friends here in Kenya to reach that common goal.”

Laundau also invoked the memory of the 1998 U.S. Embassy terrorist attack in Nairobi, vowing that with continued U.S.-Kenya cooperation, such an event would never happen again.

Kenya Lauds Partnership on Haiti MissionCabinet Secretary Mudavadi welcomed the strengthened alliance, specifically highlighting U.S. financial and diplomatic backing for Kenya’s leadership of the multinational security support mission in Haiti.

“We value the recognition by the U.S. of our contribution to international peace and stability,” Mudavadi said. “The Haiti mission is made possible through a strong partnership with the U.S. and the wider international community.”

The mutual commitments signal a strategic alignment where enhanced security cooperation directly serves the shared objective of creating a stable environment for trade and investment to flourish across the region.
