The 2026/27 Premier League season wastes no time raising the stakes, with Matchday 2 delivering a blockbuster weekend of football and an early opportunity for title contenders to lay down their markers.
Nine clubs enter the campaign with new managers, setting the stage for what promises to be an unusually volatile title race – and this weekend could provide some of its first major clues.
Friday Night Fireworks
The action kicks off at Selhurst Park on Friday night as Crystal Palace host Manchester City in a battle of two clubs embracing new eras.
Palace enter a fresh chapter under Pierre Sage, who takes charge following Oliver Glasner’s remarkable 12-month spell that delivered three trophies to south London. City, meanwhile, begin their own new journey under Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Saturday’s Double-Header
Saturday brings a fascinating double-header at the top end of the table. Liverpool welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield as Andoni Iraola takes charge of his first Premier League home match. The Spaniard aims to restore the Reds to title contention after a disappointing previous campaign, with his high-intensity, vertical approach expected to bring a fresh identity to Merseyside.
Forest, now managed by former Palace boss Glasner, will travel with confidence having won on their last two visits to Anfield.
Newly promoted Coventry and Hull meet in another intriguing contest, while Bournemouth host Everton.
De Zerbi’s Spurs Vision
Tottenham then face Newcastle in north London, with Roberto De Zerbi beginning to put his stamp on Spurs. The Italian has made it clear his ambitions extend beyond immediate results.
“I usually think about the soul, passion, spirit and mentality of the team and then the improvement we can do in the future, because I can’t stay with the focus just on the present,” explained De Zerbi.
Newcastle, under Matthias Jaissle, embark on their own new era after Eddie Howe’s departure, making this a particularly interesting tactical battle.
Sunday Showdowns
Sunday sees Chelsea host Brighton, while Leeds meet Brentford and Sunderland welcome Fulham.
The biggest spotlight, however, falls on Manchester United’s trip to newly promoted Ipswich.
Gary O’Neil knows the scale of the challenge facing his side against Michael Carrick’s United, who expect to challenge at the right end of the table.
“I’m told by people who have been there about the pressure and the size of the responsibility you feel every time you pull on that shirt because you are expected to win every game,” said O’Neil. “I’d think that’s ingrained in how they approach things. I expect them to come down and want to give us a real tough game. No mercy, no soft feeling.”
Monday Night Blockbuster
The weekend concludes with a blockbuster at Villa Park as Aston Villa host defending champions Arsenal on Monday night.
Arsenal enter the season as champions for the first time in 22 years, but Mikel Arteta knows retaining the crown presents an entirely different challenge.
“We know that it is going to demand something special – and we are going to go for it,” said Arteta. “We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task. That’s why we’ve never done it in the club, to win it again.”
Villa will relish the chance to test the champions under the lights at Villa Park.
