CFK Africa, an international nonprofit empowering youth in Kenya’s informal settlements, will celebrate local leaders and groups driving change at its annual community awards on August 9 in Kibera.
The event, one of the few of its kind in Kenya’s slum communities, will spotlight grassroots heroes and honor the Kibera Soccer Women FC for their historic win in Kenya’s FKF Women’s Cup Finals.
A vibrant celebration will unfold in Kibera, Nairobi’s largest informal settlement. “Despite limited resources, our community members show unmatched leadership, resilience, and dedication to improving lives,” said Jeffrey Okoro, CFK Africa’s Executive Director.
“This awards ceremony lets us celebrate these unsung heroes.” Each year, CFK Africa recognizes individuals and groups who embody its core values, impact, innovation, leadership, sustainability, inclusivity, resilience, and community coaching.
The organization empowers slum youth through health initiatives, leadership programs, sports for development, and girls’ empowerment all driven by a community-led model where locals nominate and select winners.
This year’s event will also highlight a major milestone, the Kibera Soccer Women FC, CFK Africa’s professional women’s team, made history by winning the national FKF Women’s Cup Finals.
Their victory showcases the extraordinary talent within Kibera’s youth. Team members also mentor girls in CFK Africa’s empowerment programs.
“Community-led development is key for lasting change,” Okoro added. “In a rapidly changing world, we must nurture homegrown solutions letting hope, talent, and innovation thrive where they’re needed most.”
The awards ceremony will bring together residents, leaders, and supporters to celebrate the power of local action in transforming lives.
