WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs Nairobi Tackle Kenya’s Healthcare Worker Shortage with Sustainable Solutions

By Eddah Waithaka

Kenya faces a critical deficit of healthcare workers, with only 7,650 new professionals entering the workforce annually, far below the 70,000 needed to meet demand, according to a WHO assessment.

Without urgent action, this gap could exceed 114,000 by 2030 and 170,000 by 2035.

To address this crisis, WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs Nairobi, Kenya’s premier healthcare and laboratory events, will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators from 6-8 October 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

The events, supported by the Ministry of Health (MoH), Africa CDC, Kenya Healthcare Foundation, and Kenya Medical Association, will focus on sustainable solutions to expand training, recruitment, and retention of health workers.

Kenya’s Healthcare Workforce Crisis Deepens

Kenya’s population, projected to surpass 63 million by 2030, is driving unprecedented demand for healthcare services.

While the health workforce grows at 3.4% annually, demand surges at 4.7%, jeopardizing progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Recent budget cuts of SH38.7 billion further threaten public health services, making private-sector collaboration essential.

A Platform for Innovation and Investment

Rebranded as WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs Nairobi, the event formerly known as Medic East Africa and Medlab East Africa is set to showcase an impressive gathering with over 300 exhibitors, representation from 20+ countries, more than 65 international speakers, and an expected attendance exceeding 8,000 participants.

The events will showcase cutting-edge healthcare technologies, foster investment, and strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional medical hub.

Healthcare Leaders Ministerial Roundtable: Driving Policy Change

In a first for WHX Nairobi, the Healthcare Leaders Ministerial Roundtable, backed by President William Ruto and the Ministry of Health, will convene policymakers to tackle workforce shortages.

Participants will engage in discussions that focus on expanding medical education, enhancing laboratory training, and incentivizing rural practice.

“Kenya’s UHC journey hinges on scalable, people-first solutions. This roundtable must spark political will and innovation across Africa,” says Desta Lakew, Group Director of Partnerships, AMREF Health Africa.

Addressing Diagnostic and Leadership Gaps

WHX Labs Nairobi will address lab workforce shortages by offering specialized training in molecular diagnostics and genomics, clinical microbiology and parasitology, and laboratory management.

The event will debut two new initiatives: “Rays of Hope,” in collaboration with IAEA and GE Healthcare, aimed at tackling radiologist shortages in East Africa, and “Women 50/50,” which promotes gender balance in healthcare.

Participants can also look forward to CPD-accredited conferences focused on digital health, primary care, and diagnostics, as well as new country pavilions from Egypt, South Africa, and Brazil.

Attendees will have opportunities to engage in live product demonstrations and expert-led discussions.

“We’re uniting leaders to drive transformative health outcomes,” says Tom Coleman, Portfolio Director, Informa Markets.
