Safaricom’s M-PESA brand injected KSh 10 million into the upcoming HSBC SVNS2 Rugby Sevens tournament, boosting Kenya’s hosting of the global event this weekend at Nyayo National Stadium.

As the tournament’s official technology partner, the telecom giant will power operations with a fully equipped, world-class media centre.

It will also provide robust internet connectivity across key areas and supply communication devices and airtime to ensure seamless event coordination and coverage.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, speaking at the announcement, applauded the Kenya Rugby Union for securing the prestigious event. “We are proud to be part of this journey,” Ndegwa stated.

He highlighted the company’s existing role in ensuring reliable salary payments for the national teams, Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses, through Safaricom Money Transfer Services Limited.

“Beyond that, we want fans to stay connected on our strong network, while empowering journalists with a world-class media centre. We are also delighted to offer fans special M-PESA App discount deals and exclusive Rugby BLIVE data bundles,” Ndegwa added.

The M-PESA perks include exclusive discounts on flights and cab services from February 14th to 16th. The app will offer a 25% discount on trip and flight bookings over KSh 5,000, a 25% discount on bus bookings over KSh 1,500, and a KSh 100 cashback for Little Cab users spending KSh 250.

This tournament support strengthens Safaricom’s deep ties with Kenyan rugby. M-PESA currently serves as the official sponsor of Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses under a two-year, KSh 100 million-plus partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union.

The sponsorship covers monthly allowances, medical insurance, airtime, and financial literacy programs. The two-day tournament marks a critical home-ground battle for both Kenyan teams as they fight for promotion back to the HSBC SVNS top division.

Twelve teams will compete. The men’s category features Kenya, USA, Uruguay, Germany, Belgium, and Canada. The women’s competition will see Kenya face off against Brazil, Spain, China, South Africa, and Argentina.

Kenya Lionesses Captain Sheila Chajira expressed the teams’ readiness. “We are truly thrilled to compete on home soil… To our sponsors, thank you for your continued support. To our fans, we invite you to come out in large numbers and cheer us on as we aim to make history,” Chajira said.

The event forms part of the global HSBC SVNS series, promising a weekend of high-octane rugby sevens action in Nairobi.
